Solomon Ray Releases New Single "El Otro," Talks Upcoming EP

Solomon Ray is embarking on a new stage in his career with the release of his first Spanish-language single.

Produced by Daneon (Maluma, Nicky Jam, Karol G., Farruko, CNCO) and co-written by Neka One (Chyno Miranda), "El Otro" is a reggaeton jam that follows the bopping urban sound taking over the Latin charts this year.

"I originally recorded the song in English first while in New York," he told Musical Notes Global about the track. "When I got back to California I wasn't in love with it. So I went to Miami and recorded it in Spanish and changed the lyrics to have the first verse more heartfelt. Once we did that it all came together nicely in a matter of an hour."

The San Diego native was born to an African-American mother and Mexican father and grew up listening to Mariachi and Norteño music, sounds that continue to influence his own work. "I've always had this strong affinity towards Latin genres in music," he said. "Especially the lyrics because they're some of most romantic song I've ever heard. And I've always wanted to be apart of that."

Ray is currently working on his upcoming EP, his first effort since 2011's The Love Rocker Project, and he's recording it almost entirely in Spanish. A speech impediment previously hindered his confidence to record in the language, but he's not letting that stop him any longer. "I've always wanted to do music in Spanish, but I think time and fear got the best of me before," he admitted. "This upcoming EP will mostly be in Spanish but also have some English moments as well."

Having made his debut in 2008 with two mixtapes that together sold more than 10,000 copies, Ray told Musical Notes Global that he has grown significantly in the years since. "Everything has changed for the better," he said. "Vocally I'm stronger than I was then. Production is tighter. Even how I write songs has changed. But one thing that's been consistent is mixing genres and different styles together. But my outlook has changed. I'm no longer afraid or trying something new or being honest."
