Bay Area soul band Monophonics are set up for a big 2018 with new music and a spring tour.
On February 15, the band will release their new EP Mirrors, a six-track collection of covers that highlight their musical influences. “We wanted to do a couple songs that were more familiar to people and then shine some light on groups we’re big into,” lead singer, keyboardist and co-producer Kelly Finnigan said. “Not only are these great songs, but these are artists that we listen to and are influenced by.”
Although the EP will consist of covers, including an intriguing Mediterranean-inspired revival of the Mamas and the Papas hit "California Dreaming" as well as a stirring version of The Invincibles' "My Heart Cries," the band has recorded the classic tracks in their own funky, soulful style that will speak to a whole new generation of listeners. “It’s not about making records that sound old, it’s about making records that sound cool," Finnigan said. There's no doubt that this EP will be super cool.
