Eric Hutchinson is stuck in the ‘90s. But lucky for us, it’s in a really cool way.

The singer-songwriter recently released his single “Cooler Than You,” an alt-rock anthem that delivers a heaping dose of nostalgia. Taking on the viewpoint of his high school self and revealing the introverted tendencies he grappled with in his youth, he transports listeners back to their own high school experience, challenging stereotypes and questioning how people present themselves to others. “I’m always interested in asking questions in my songs: who’s cool, who gets to decide, and where do I fit into all of that?” Hutchinson says.

Created by Andres Soler, the animated music video features loosely drawn cartoons and colorful marker strokes, showcasing the song’s story through the intimate pages of a student’s notebook. Watch below.

“Cooler Than You” is the second single off of Hutchinson’s upcoming new album Class of ‘98, a ‘90s alt-rock- inspired autobiography in which he explores the full scope of his teenage years, and the angst and alienation he lived during that time. Class of ‘98 drops this summer.
