[INTERVIEW] Chesca Música Talks Her Single "Mijita" + Her Hopes for the Future of the Industry

Latina alt-pop artist Chesca Música is one of a kind.

Born in San Francisco and raised in New York, the talented singer and songwriter has already begun to make waves in the industry as one of the most fearless and strong-willed artists on the scene, advocating for women while enchanting listeners around the world with her dreamy, border-shattering releases.

In 2022, Chesca was named as one of Modern Luxury Magazine’s Dynamic Women of 2022, and earlier this year, the inspiring artist released her powerful debut Spanish single “Mijita,” which was included on her April 2023 bilingual album “TEN Las Canciones,” her third studio project.

With an irresistible and eclectic musical fusion shaped from elements of electro-pop, EDM, R&B, and Latin sounds and rhythms serving as the perfect backdrop for this unforgettable story, “Mijita,” produced by Alex Arias (Cher, Santana, Kali Uchis), captures the unstoppable spirit and fierce determination demonstrated by Chesca’s late grandmother, who became the first female notary in Mexicali and was one of the only females in her class to graduate from law school in the early 1950s.

Chesca sat down with Musical Notes Global to share more details about “Mijita” and how she hopes the music industry evolves going forward. Check out the conversation below.

Musical Notes Global: With such a personal story as the inspiration behind it, what does it mean to you to be able to share this song with the world?

Chesca Música: It means a lot to me to be able to share this song with the world because the message of the song is very significant to me. It highlights the importance of women putting themselves first and following their dreams and happiness despite the obstacles the patriarchy has designed for us. I hope this song can open up a dialogue about the importance of choice and the many different paths a woman can take in life.

MNG: As a female artist, how do you hope to impact the music industry with your work?

CM: I hope I can inspire other artists to create more female empowerment songs that talk about the importance of our dreams, happiness and needs in this life. Inspiring and encouraging one another can create the positive change we all want to see not just in the music industry but in other industries as well.

MNG: How do you hope the industry changes as time goes on?

CM: I hope to hear more songs written by women as well as see these songs promoted more throughout the industry. Our perspective of the world is important and our stories are vital to the growth and progress we all want to see.

MNG: What does Women's History Month represent for you?

CM: Women’s History Month is my favorite month of the year because it is empowering and it is a great celebration of all the contributions women have made throughout history. It is a reminder that we would not be where we are today without all of the strong and courageous women that have advocated and contributed significantly to our paths. While a lot has changed, there is still a lot of work to be done. However, I do feel confident that if we continue to empower one another we will continue to see great change.
