Grammy-nominated artist Willy William truly became a household name in 2017 when he teamed up with Colombian reggaetonero J Balvin to bring listeners the infectious international hit “Mi Gente.”

A revamp of his original track “Voodoo Song,” William’s collaboration with Balvin took the globe by storm, leading the author, composer, producer, DJ to become the #1 most Shazammed French artist in the world. “Everything about ‘Mi Gente’ still feels surreal,” William told Musical Notes Global. “I am so blessed about Balvin wanting to collaborate with me, and we are so blessed to be able to have reached so many milestones together, the Latin AMAs being another amazing one.”

Featuring colorful imagery, dynamic dancing, and an appearance by Italian DJ Gianluca Vacchi, the vibrant and high energy music video was produced by Scorpio music and accumulated more than 2 billion views on YouTube alone, garnering an MTV VMA.

While the immense response to the video has been humbling, William says his favorite memories actually took place the night before the shoot, when he was in the studio and met Balvin for the first time.

As a result of the song’s popularity, just a few months after its initial release, “Mi Gente” caught the attention of Beyoncé, or rather, her daughter Blue Ivy, who prompted the superstar to join for a remix. “I am sure everyone can put himself/herself in my shoes,” William said. “I am a huge fan of her talent, and when my team told me about the possibility about her doing a feat I was ‘wow, life is full of surprises’. Music really has no limits.” Proceeds from the remix went to hurricane and earthquake relief funds in the aftermath of last year’s natural disasters that hit Puerto Rico, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

And it’s the remix that has lead William to now find himself nominated for two Latin American Music Awards this year in the categories Song of the Year and Favorite Urban Song. Although he will not be attending the show on October 25, he told Musical Notes Global “I hope to be back in the future with more nominated songs.”

Watch the Latin American Music Awards live on Telemundo on October 25 at 8pm/7c. Tune in to the red carpet show “La Alfombra de Latin AMAs” at 7pm/6c.
