Multicultural Duo WAPEA Debuts with New Self-Titled Single

Hit makers Jovany Barreto and Tat Tong are onto something exciting and totally refreshing as 2019 kicks off.

Widely known as The Swaggernautz, a producer-songwriter collective, Barreto and Tong have produced over 60 Top 20 hits for international artists, including 20 No. 1 hits worldwide and ten certified platinum singles.

Now Barreto, a Cuban-American producer and singer/songwriter from Louisiana, and Tong, a songwriter from Singapore who co-wrote Troye Sivan’s “Happy Little Pill,” are infusing their diverse cultural influences into an innovative new project for the 21st century: WAPEA.

The name has a double meaning. First, it’s an acronym for the English phrase “When Are People Evolving Again?”, and second, it’s Caribbean slang for “Work it, do ya thing.”

As WAPEA, the unstoppable duo have just released their new self-titled single. Incorporating Caribbean rhythms and a line from an iconic Chinese folk tune titled “Horse Racing,” played on the erhu, a Chinese 2-string fiddle, “Wapea” is the perfect weekend party jam and leaves listeners ready and waiting for what this tag team has in store for the year ahead.

The official music video, directed by Benji Estrada, features stop-motion 2D animation and vibrant sets. Watch below.
