[INTERVIEW] Rising Regional Mexican Artist GiGi Talks Female Empowerment + New Single "G Blanco"

Born Graciela Ortiz, rising regional Mexican artist GiGi is making waves, establishing herself as one of the most intriguing female artists to watch in Latin music today.

The Mexican-American Chicago native grew up with her mother, and at just six years old was presented with the opportunity to participate in a talent show hosted by Univision’s “Despierta América.” By the time she was 11, she was performing classical mariachi songs at festivals. Later, when it came time to pursue a career, she began studying veterinary medicine in Guadalajara, but it wasn’t long before the need to follow her dreams in music consumed her completely.

Now, with three albums and a tour under her belt, Gigi continues to rise as a promising new star in the Latin music industry, where regional Mexican music is more popular than ever. Although the genre is traditionally male-dominated, she is one of the few female artists who are beginning to turn the tables, finding herself in the company of other rising stars such as Victoria La Mala, Angela Aguilar, and Ivonne Galaz. “I feel very proud to be a female artist in this genre,” Gigi told Musical Notes Global. “Yes, it could be hard at times because it is very dominated by men, but to be able to represent females and be the voice for us makes me proud.”

Focusing on motivating her fans and empowering women, in June, the talented singer and songwriter released her single “G Blanco,” an autobiographical track that not only speaks to her own personal strength as she’s fought to achieve her dreams, but also speaks to female empowerment and being unshakable in the face of adversity. “My new single represents a strong woman. I think as women we all have a story to tell, and my song represents that. Like the lyrics say, ‘entre balas y heridas,’ which means ‘through wounds and shotguns’; we are always strong and get up from anything,” she told Musical Notes Global. “I hope people feel empowered and take it as motivation and a positive message. Regardless of anything, we always have to push through and keep going and fight for our dreams.”

Gigi shared that she loves that more female artists are beginning to explore regional Mexican music, and there is no doubt that, as she continues to release more original material, she will serve as an inspiring representative of a new generation of tenacious and resilient women who are determined to challenge tradition.
