Get to Know Me: mine

Born in Fargo, ND and based in Boston, where she’s now studying at Berklee College of Music, mine (aka Mia Schuster) has arrived to shine a positive light within today’s indie-pop scene.

The talented songwriter and musician just released her luscious new single “H2O,” an empowering anthem for self-acceptance in which she speaks to the unique freedom that we experience when we acknowledge and accept who we are and allow that place to be the root of our actions going forward. Inspired in part by the challenges she’s faced as she’s begun to construct her artistic path, the song is a stunning vessel of hope and a fulfilling source of comfort in turbulent times by encouraging listeners to realign with themselves.

mine sat down with Musical Notes Global to share more details behind her new single, her artist name, and more. Get to know her below.

For those of you who may not know me, I'm mine! I’m a singer-songwriter and producer originally from Fargo, ND.

This is why I call myself mine: My real name is Mia which means ‘mine’. I’ve always wanted to go by Mia for my artist name, but since that name by itself is too common, mine felt like a cool way to still keep a connection to my name, but also be a bit more unique.

Here's the scoop on my new single "H2O": This is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written. It’s a big step for me. It’s the first song I wrote under my ‘as honest as it can get’ writing policy. It’s the first song I’m releasing under my new artist name. It’s the first song where I feel like I get to really tell my side of the story with full confidence. I’m really proud of it.

It was inspired by several different things, but the initial spark actually came from one of my favorite shows, “Avatar The Last Airbender.” I was pretty deep in my obsession at the time that I started writing the song. Think about wanting to be a waterbender one too many times and bam! You’ve got yourself a song about H2O. Super silly, but inspiration can seriously come from anywhere!

To me, this song represents confidence. This song is the full embodiment of that word for me. It’s a power song on standing firm in identity. I think that is what true confidence is. Knowing who you are and standing by it.

I hope listeners feel empowered. This song has brought me a lot of freedom, and I hope that it can do the same for others as well.

When writing music, I draw my greatest inspiration from the world around me! What I’m going through in my personal life, what a friend is going through, a favorite movie or show, new music. Literally anything can become a song if you want it to.

The song I wish I wrote is “Stupid Deep” by Jon Bellion. That song is absolutely brilliant in every way. Such simple but profound lyrics and insane production. One of my all-time favorite songs.

I really admire Taylor Swift. She’s super cool. She holds herself with such grace, and I really feel like she has made lasting, impactful waves for women in the music industry. All that on top of being an incredible, multi-faceted creator. I aspire to be like her one day.

A few songs on my playlist right now are: “Move Me” by half alive, “Hurt My Feelings” by Hastings, and “LILAC” by IU - some of my current favs!

For the rest of 2022, I'm looking forward to having fun! Honest and simple as that. I’m prioritizing enjoying and living life to the fullest. The last few years have been tough for so many reasons, but the sun is out. It’s time to shine, baby.
