Get to Know Me: Jenny Kern

Born in Canada and based in Brooklyn, Jenny Kern’s captivating vocals and poignant lyrics have already captured the hearts of many. And she’s just getting started.

With a background in TV and film production, Kern made the decision to pursue a career in music full time, and her songs have been heard on major American networks like MTV, ABC, and the CW.

The indie dream/pop artist recently released her latest single “I Should Lose You,” a powerful tale about falling out of love with that special someone and accepting that it’s time to let go instead of continuing on, unhappy, in a one-sided relationship. On this track, her honesty shines brighter than ever as she draws listeners into a euphoric world of complex emotions and vibrant instrumentation.

Kern sat down with Musical Notes Global to share more about her new single, her inspirations, and current playlist faves. Get to Know her below.

For those of you who may not know me, I'm Jenny Kern, an indie pop singer-songwriter based in Brooklyn, NY.

Here's the scoop on my new single “I Should Lose You”: This song is about falling out of love with someone and realizing you need to let them go. You can be in a relationship, feel a shift and know something isn’t right anymore but the second you say it out loud it’s in the open. You can’t take it back. The truth is, the best solution is to rip off the band aid and move on. That’s what I had to do.

It was inspired by a personal relationship.

To me, this song represents owning your own feelings and letting go of any toxic relationship or a relationship that is not serving either of you.

I hope listeners feel more connected to themselves and what they want and need from a relationship.

When writing music, more often than not, I draw my greatest inspiration from my own personal experiences, relationships and feelings.

The artists who have most influenced me most are: currently The 1975, MUNA, Fickle Friends, Chelsea Cutler and Maggie Rogers.

I really admire
‘90s female singer songwriters like Annie Lennox, Sarah McLachlan and Dido.

A few songs on my playlist right now are: “If Only” by Raveena, “IRL” by Fickle Friends and “Want Want” by Maggie Rogers

For the rest of 2022, I'm looking forward to releasing more music and touring North America in the fall.
