Aminah Hughes continues to prove that she is a true Renaissance woman.
The Australian singer and songwriter is also a producer, director, and screenwriter, and is currently celebrating a win for Best Music Video as the director of “Naf Naf” by Steve Hensby Band.
Today, however, Musical Notes Global is excited to have the exclusive premiere of Hughes’ new music video “I Need to Learn.” Capturing her audience’s attention with delicately soulful vocals, she speaks to the importance of staying true to oneself and listening to one’s own voice instead of the voices of others. The story’s honesty is only strengthened by the simplicity of the black and white accompanying visuals, which place Hughes behind a vintage microphone, allowing her to speak her truth without distraction.
Considering the scope of Hughes’ talents, it comes as no surprise that she wrote, directed, and produced this video herself. "I’ve worked in the worlds of music and film for some time now but seldom have the two come together and I love it when they do,” she explained to Musical Notes Global. “I recently had the opportunity to direct a music video for a nine-piece band and rather fancied having a new video for myself as well. I had a clear vision for what I thought would work, so I decided to write, direct and produce the video myself. “I Need to Learn” is a simple song with a clear message. It’s stripped-back blues featuring emotive vocals and electric guitar, so I wanted a video that was stripped-back too. I went for a classic black and white performance piece that showcases the lyrics and musicianship on the track. My original band members are back in Ireland and The States, so I employed some local musicians/actors in Perth to play the parts. The concept behind this video was ultimately about dropping the bells and whistles of a large scale production and believing in the song and performance enough to give them space to breathe."
“I Need to Learn” is featured on Hughes’s powerful debut album Blue Wooden Boat. Watch the official music video below.
