Nightly Offers Fresh Take on First Album with "night, love you." Alternative EP

In October of 2020, Nashville alt-pop band Nightly released their first LP titled “night, love you.” Jonathan Capeci, Joey Beretta, and Nick Sainato showcased their versatility as songwriters, composers, and producers with the 14 song synth-pop dream. “night, love you.” covered a range of topics from getting older, to pining for a crush, to telling an ex to take a hike.

On Friday the trio released an EP of alternate versions of four tracks from “night, love you.” The stripped/acoustic versions of “Not Like You,” “So Sly,” “Summer,” and “Older” are sisters to the original; not better, not worse, but a different spin on each song. The emotional highs and lows of the EP are balanced out with the captivating reworkings of “Not Like You” and “So Sly” and the acoustic versions of “Summer” and “Older.” All give a more calming ambience, almost a different take on the same story.

“So Sly”’s reworking stands out on the EP. The production starts out slow and builds up to the chorus, dropping a steady beat and a fun layered synth to carry the song to the second verse. Listeners will want to dance and yell along to the dazzling and electrifying chorus. The contrast comes next in the form of “Summer.”

“Summer” in itself is already a cute, up-beat song, but stripping away the usual synth-pop stylings for only Capeci’s soft vocals and acoustic backing make for an even more swoon-worthy confession. “night, love you.”’s “Summer” and the “night, love you. (alt EP)”’s “Summer” are nice companion tracks, showing, again, Nightly’s versatility as producers of their own music.

And lastly, Nightly’s audience collectively cried to “Older” when it was released as a slow pop ballad, but now it’s even more emo as an acoustic slow pop ballad. The reverb-ed sound of the guitar echoes behind Capeci’s lush vocals, almost blanketing his fear and worry. The heartbreaking lyrics seem to bounce off of the guitar and carry itself to the end of the EP.

This EP is perfect for late night drives or when you just need to think or to get out of your head for a bit. If there’s one thing that’s apparent after this release, “night, love you.” is great in all of its forms and hearing it live will definitely be cathartic for many.
